I gripped my bag tight as I waited for someone to start the conversation in the otherwise awkward environment of the host family dinner. It was towards the beginning of the trip and Will and I were still a little new to being gusts to our host family. However it was after that dinner that one song changed everything. One of the host families friends put on the song Let It Go from the popular movie Frozen and began singing it in nearly perfect English. Will and I looked at each other in disbelief. We knew that frozen was somewhat popular globally but we never expected hearing that song in Japan. Will and I slowly but surely began to join in on the singing and pretty soon the entire family joined in on it. The social barrier was broken as we began to sing through the entire soundtrack of Frozen together. It was so amazing how one movie can spread so far throughout the world and help cause connections between cultures. From that point on we understood our host family better and new connections were made. I will remember a lot of things about the trip to Japan but that Frozen sing along will be etched into my memory for years to come.
